Service, MOT, or both together?
An MOT is a legal safety check, while a service is preventative maintenance, and the two do different jobs. The MOT confirms your car is roadworthy on the day; the service keeps it that way and catches the wear that would otherwise become an MOT failure or a breakdown. That is why booking them together makes sense, and it is our most popular option: you get a full service and your MOT for just £19.99, most jobs finished the same day, with a free vehicle health check thrown in. Doing both in one visit also means any issue found during the service can be put right before the MOT, so you are far more likely to pass first time.
Which service does your car need?
If you are not sure which service to book, it usually comes down to your mileage and how long it has been since the last one. As a rule, higher mileage and older cars benefit from an interim service twice a year, while most drivers are well looked after by a full service once a year. The table below sets out what each one covers and who it suits.
| Service | Interval | What it covers | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interim service | Every 6 months or 6,000 miles | Oil and filter change, visual brake check, tyres, lights, fluids, battery test, suspension and steering check | High-mileage drivers, older cars, taxis and delivery vehicles |
| Full service | Every 12 months or 12,000 miles | All interim items plus air and pollen filters, full brake and fluid checks, exhaust, drive belt and diagnostic scan, service book stamped | Average mileage, keeping to the maker's schedule |
| Major service | Every 24 months or 24,000 miles | All full-service items plus spark plugs, brake fluid and coolant service, fuel filter (diesel) and belt replacement if due | Peak performance, higher mileage, before long journeys |
An interim takes around one to two hours, a full service two to three, and a major three to four. Every service includes a complimentary vehicle health check and a written report, and where a car uses variable service intervals, as many VAG, BMW and Mercedes models do, we follow the manufacturer's own schedule and oil specification exactly.
What happens at your MOT
Our MOT testing follows DVSA standards from start to finish and takes about 45 minutes, with a certificate valid for 12 months. The tester works through the safety and emissions items that matter most on the road, and you get a plain explanation of anything found rather than a list of jargon. We test petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric cars, high-performance and classic vehicles, and light commercials up to 3.5 tonnes.
| Area checked | Included in the test |
|---|---|
| Lights and electrics | Headlamps, indicators, brake lights and electrical systems |
| Steering and suspension | Play, wear and condition of key components |
| Brakes | Condition and braking performance |
| Tyres and wheels | Tread depth, condition and security |
| Exhaust and emissions | Exhaust condition and emissions within legal limits |
| Body, structure and safety | Bodywork, seat belts, windscreen, wipers, horn and mirrors |
It is worth a quick look over the car beforehand, as many failures are avoidable. Check every bulb works, that tyres are above the 1.6mm legal tread depth, and that the wipers, washers and windscreen are in good order. Better still, take advantage of our free pre-MOT check, which flags likely failures before the official test so there are no surprises.
If your car fails the MOT
A fail is rarely the disaster it feels like, and most are minor and sorted the same day. You get a clear explanation of each failure point and an honest, competitive quote to put it right, with no pressure. Because we would rather you had options than felt cornered, we offer a free MOT re-test within 10 working days, even if you choose to have the repairs done elsewhere.
- Brake wear and performance, and worn suspension components
- Tyres below the legal limit and exhaust leaks or emissions faults
- Blown bulbs, electrical faults, windscreen damage and registration plate issues
Warranty-safe servicing for VAG, BMW and Mercedes
Servicing your car with us does not put your manufacturer warranty at risk. For VAG Group (Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda), Mercedes-Benz and BMW, we are authorised to register services on the manufacturer's own systems, so the work appears in the central database and your digital service book, exactly as it would at a franchised dealer. That protects your warranty and your resale value, at noticeably better prices. We service everything from Vauxhall, Ford, Peugeot and Renault to Mini, Land Rover, Japanese and Korean makes, and we carry out routine servicing and MOTs on hybrids and electric vehicles too (though not specialist repairs to their high-voltage components).
Why it pays to stay on top of it
Beyond keeping you legal, regular servicing and a valid MOT quietly save you money and hassle. A missed oil change can cost an engine; a small brake issue caught early avoids an expensive caliper later; and a complete service history makes the car easier to sell for more. Skipping the MOT is a false economy in its own right, as driving without one is illegal.
| Staying maintained | What it protects you from |
|---|---|
| Regular servicing | Engine, brake and belt failures that turn small bills into large ones |
| Valid MOT | Up to a £1,000 fine, invalid insurance, licence points and even an impounded car |
| Full service history | Lost resale value and a harder private sale |
| Correct oil and tyre pressures | Wasted fuel and avoidable breakdowns |
Servicing to suit how you drive
How often you should service depends as much on your car and your miles as on the calendar. High-mileage drivers do best with an interim every six months alongside an annual full service, while low-mileage cars still need a yearly service because oil and rubber degrade with time, not just use. Diesels have their own needs, including DPF regeneration monitoring, AdBlue upkeep and fuel filter changes, and hybrids and EVs need their oil (where fitted), brakes, tyres and suspension checked and an MOT to the same DVSA standard.
More than a service and MOT
While servicing and MOTs are our bread and butter, we are a full workshop, so we can put right most of what a service or test uncovers in the same place. That includes brake pad and disc replacement, tyre fitting and balancing, battery replacement, exhaust and clutch work, timing belts and suspension parts, plus engine management light diagnosis, pre-purchase inspections, air conditioning re-gas, DPF cleaning and AdBlue repairs. For anything more involved, you get honest advice first.
