Headlight Repair and Coding in Luton

Headlight Repair and Coding in Luton

A headlight that dims, flickers or puts a warning on the dash is more than an annoyance. It is a safety problem and an MOT failure waiting to happen. Our Luton workshop carries out headlight repair on everything from simple halogen bulbs to xenon and LED units with their own control modules, and we carry out headlight coding so a replacement unit works properly with your car.

Headlight faults we fix

Modern headlights are part of the car's electrical network rather than a bulb and a switch, so the cause is not always where it looks. We test the circuit, read the fault codes and find the failed part before we replace anything.

FaultUsual causeWhat we do

Headlight coding after a replacement

Many xenon and LED headlights carry their own electronics, and the car has to be told about a new unit before it will work properly. Without headlight coding you can be left with a warning light, a beam that will not level, daytime running lights that stay off or adaptive features that do nothing. It is a common problem after a headlight has been replaced following an accident, or when a second hand unit has been fitted.

We code replacement headlights on most popular makes, from Mercedes headlight coding to BMW and the Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda group, using dealer level diagnostic software. Where a used unit is involved we check the part number first, because not every headlight will code to every car, and it is better to know that before it is fitted. Our wider coding and programming work uses the same tools.

Road legal lighting and your MOT

Headlights are checked closely at every MOT: both must work, the beam must point where it should and the light must be the right colour. A headlight that is out, aimed too high or showing a warning is an MOT failure, so after fitting a new unit we set the aim and check that the levelling works before the car goes back to you.

One thing worth knowing: LED bulbs fitted into headlights built for halogen bulbs are not road legal in the UK, even though they are widely sold. They scatter light and can dazzle other drivers. If you want brighter lighting we will talk you through the legal options for your car, and we always fit the correct bulb or unit for the headlight you have.

Other lighting and electrical extras we repair

Headlights are the main job, but the same skills cover the rest of the lighting and comfort electrics on your car:

  • Tail lights, brake lights and indicators
  • Interior, dashboard and instrument cluster lighting
  • Parking sensors and reversing cameras
  • Heated seats, heated mirrors and electric mirrors

Headlight questions we hear a lot

Why is one headlight dimmer than the other? Usually a bulb near the end of its life, a failing xenon ballast or a poor earth connection. We test the circuit to find out which before replacing anything.

Does a new headlight need coding? Many xenon and LED units do, especially on Mercedes, BMW and the VW group. Simple halogen headlights usually do not.

Can you code a second hand headlight? Often, yes, as long as it is the right part for your car. We check the part number before it goes on.

Will a headlight fault fail my MOT? Yes. A headlight that does not work, points the wrong way or shows a warning will fail, so it is worth fixing before your test.

Can you fit LED bulbs to my halogen headlights? Not legally. They are not approved for road use in halogen headlights in the UK, so we fit the correct bulbs or units instead.

How long does a headlight repair take? Bulb and wiring faults are often fixed the same day. A new headlight unit depends on parts, and we will give you a time once we have checked the car.
